报告摘要:


As high-power long-lifetime electrochemical energy storage devices, supercapacitors have attracted much attention and been widely studied. However, unclear ion behaviors during operation and the low capacity limit further developments and applications of supercapapcitors. With advanced in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and basic electrochemical theory, here we report two discoveries, which would guide the design of high-performance supercapacitor and hybrid supercapacitor devices. Using in situ XAS, we found that transition metal ions dissolved in water associate to form oligomer species inside electrified carbon micropores. The oligomerization consumes energy, while the oligomers have sluggish dissociation kinetics, leading to supercapacitor capacitance fading. We developed an intermittent reverse cycling strategy to achieve better cycling performances. Directed by the parallel plate model of ion adsorption and lattice-gas model of ion intercalation, we pointed out the issue of intrinsically ever-changing electrolyte concentration of hybrid Li-ion battery/supercapacitor strategy, developed a hybrid Li-ion/dual-ion battery strategy to address this issue, and finally proposed a high-capacity energy storage architecture that even has a higher theoretical capacity than conventional rocking-chair Li-ion battery. These works further deepen our understanding of supercapacitors, provide new guides for the device design, and put forward new requirements for energy storage materials.

  陈晓东教授,新加坡国家科学院院士和新加坡工程院院士,新加坡南洋理工大学材料科学与工程校长讲席教授,兼任南洋理工大学化学教授和医学教授,新加坡科技研究局材料与工程研究院科学总监,新加坡南洋理工大学柔性器件创新中心主任和Max Planck-NTU人工感知联合实验室主任。英国皇家化学会会士和中国化学会会士;并于2022年起担任ACS Nano主编,同时担任超过15种国际期刊的编辑顾问委员会委员。主要研究方向为力材科学、柔性电子技术、数字化传感、人机交互界面和碳负极技术等。目前在NatureNature ElectronicsNature Communications等期刊上发表论文370余篇,引用35000余次。申请专利40余项,多项成果已被转化。曾获新加坡总统科学奖、南洋研究奖、Lubrizol青年材料科学研究员奖,洪堡基金会贝塞尔研究奖、三井化学-SNIC产业奖等。
